Whether you are alone responsible for marketing or operate as part of a team, a thorough review process can help you keep on track with your long-term objectives while tackling the problems of tactical implementation on a daily basis.
I’m not a great lover of lengthy, drawn-out review sessions, so I have a few of tricks under my sleeve to make marketing review meetings productive. The first step is to schedule review meetings on a regular basis. If you’re just beginning started, I’d suggest performing them once a month. While meeting quarterly is preferable than not meeting at all, I find that quarterly sessions tend to drag on and stray.
In these sessions, the second strategy I use is to follow a four-step approach. I’ve discovered that sticking to the same method and performing it on a regular basis results in a more efficient and successful marketing review process. Here’s a rundown of the steps I prefer to take:
Review
During the first phase, I prefer to go over our plan’s assumptions and approach, as well as any lessons learnt.
Assumptions – All plans are based on assumptions based on the best available knowledge at the time. One of the first actions in your review process should be to go through your assumptions and see whether they’re still applicable to your strategy.
Strategy — I find that restating our marketing strategy at the start of the review meeting helps us stay focused on the larger picture of what we want to achieve.
What lessons have we learned since our previous meeting? This might include everything from errors made to competition news to consumer comments, among other things.
Update
We’ll make modifications to our marketing materials, milestones, budgets, analytics, and marketing calendar throughout this phase.
Plan
We prepare for the next iteration during the plan phase. We set and assign milestones, determine resource requirements, and plan timetables, among other things.
Implement
It’s time to “do marketing” once again. During this phase, we continue to carry out our usual strategies while also working on putting the ones stated during the planning phase into action.
