It’s important to stay on top of the latest marketing trends, especially for small businesses. In this blog post, we’ll focus on a pervasive and alarming trend that happened over the past few months: SPAM. Experts say there are four ways to avoid being targeted by spammers in 2018:

Spam Act is a law that was passed in 2003 to protect consumers from spam. The law also requires businesses to provide “opt-in” consent before sending commercial electronic messages, which includes email marketing.
We’ve all seen the “who really falls for this stuff” SPAM and we all know it’s a load of nonsense.
Consider the following scenario: RE: I’m looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible. I’d appreciate it if you could assist me (sic) Google says: Google has sent out a winning notice. What’s up with the ones that actually tell you they’re SPAM in the subject line? Is their forthrightness and honesty meant to take me off guard and make me want to open it?
I believe you get my argument. Isn’t it hilarious?!?
But what about the less apparent SPAM? Emails from individuals we gave a business card to at a Chamber mixer (but who didn’t give us permission to be added to their list), or who friended us on Facebook, or who contacted us via our website’s Contact page? What about the SPAMMERS, huh? They’re a bit more cunning, but are you up against them? I really hope not.
Here’s the deal: Every week, I get hundreds of SPAM emails, some of which are amusing, and others from individuals who really want my business and believe that SPAMMING me is the best way to acquire it. And what strikes me as amusing is that for every SPAM email I get, I probably know at least 5 companies directly – or electronically, for that matter – who I would contact if I needed that product or service. Why would I employ a total stranger – especially one who is a SPAMMER?
So here’s my point: When I’m helping small company owners create marketing strategies for their companies, one of the most important aspects of the process is finding out how they’re unique so they can stand out in a crowd. One approach to stand out is to avoid spamming; another is to go out there and meet people, whether offline or online. The more people who are familiar with you, the more likely you are to be remembered when they are ready to purchase what you have to offer. The objective is to make your company well-known in your industry so that your target market never needs to resort to a stranger!
Here are four things you can do to avoid competing with SPAMMERS (or anybody else!) if you don’t want to:
- Networking is a fantastic method to meet new people and broaden our area of influence. Join one or two networking groups – and whatever you do, make sure the group, association, or organization is full of individuals that match your target market profile – or can at least connect you to them. Rotary is probably not the ideal networking organization for you if your target market is ladies between the ages of 25 and 35.
- Participate in social media – I have hundreds of online friends. Others I’ve met in person, some I haven’t, and some I’ll probably never meet. But none of it counts in today’s society. I’ve established genuine professional connections with individuals I’ve never seen in person – and I’ve received and recommended business to them! It’s not just about blasting’salesy’ content on social media; it’s about educating, enlightening, and engaging an audience. This is a fantastic method to stand out from the crowd and get your brand in front of people’s minds.
- Blogging is an excellent method to market your business while also establishing a reputation and trust. Writing interesting, relevant posts/articles can help you stand out from the crowd (and certainly SPAMMERS). And blogging isn’t just about writing a few words and putting them on your blog; you need to be vigilant about repurposing your blog articles and submitting them to sites that our target market frequents in order to broaden your reach.
- Be a giver – When I worked for other people, I worked in sales and marketing for 17 years, but it wasn’t until I became a company owner that I understood the power of giving. I had always approached networking and connection development with the mindset of “what’s in it for me.” I now approach it with a mindset of “how can I assist you?” And the more individuals I meet, the more people I can recommend and introduce to others who can assist them. This part of it is far more enjoyable to me than the previous method! It’s so much more enjoyable to be a giving than than a taker! When was the last time you received anything from a SPAMMER?
It all comes down to this: as company owners, our objective is to assist our target market learn to know, like, and trust us so that when they’re ready to purchase, they’ll buy from us (a John Jantsch, founder of Duct Tape Marketing saying).
