Every single one of us thinks, really believes, that we listen to others. I’ve come to make a counter-argument. We don’t listen; we hear instead. Our ears pick up on what someone is saying, but we’re not actually paying attention.
We miss their tone, intonation, particular phrases, attitudes, beliefs, subtleties, and what’s behind the words. We make snap judgements about what people say or how they say it, and we don’t listen. We may even be thinking about the next meeting, the report we need to complete, the argument we had with our children this morning, or any number of other things. We can’t be listening if any of these realities exist, even if we hear the words. The first step toward better communication is to improve listening skills.
More importantly, increasing your listening skills will increase trust by allowing people to feel understood, reduce misunderstandings, increase productivity, and, and, and… all of which will lead to better relationships and more fun. Who wouldn’t want that?
