Uncertainty is something that business leaders have to deal with on a regular basis. It’s the nature of life and it can be paralyzing for those who find themselves in uncertain times, leading them unable to move forward. This article will explore how companies like Netflix were able to weather uncertainty by mobilizing around their core values and what you can do as an individual leader if your company faces similar challenges.

In this sermon, the speaker talks about how humanity is always uncertain. However, there are certain things that we can be sure of in life. These include God’s love and His promises.

Wow, this last year has been quite the experience, hasn’t it? The financial collapse of Wall Street, the mortgage crisis, the worldwide economic slump, rising unemployment… I believe I can confidently state that this year has been “exceptional.” And I suspect that few individuals have been spared the consequences of these occurrences.

For many individuals, the consequences have been severe, ranging from a significant loss of net worth to dire financial situations. While certain market segments and firms have remained unaffected, the majority of businesses and individuals have suffered significant losses.

I live and work in a milieu of plenty and optimism (marketing, company development, etc.) where incidents like this are overlooked. And I think that this is always the best course of action. However, I believe it is important to acknowledge the tough times we have had in order to understand where we are in our companies and where we want to take them.

This year, many Americans discovered that certain things are beyond their control. We discovered that despite our best efforts, objectives may be missed. We discovered that, regardless of our previous work experience or performance, we may still lose our jobs. And we discovered that what worked in the past may no longer be effective. All of these occurrences have contributed to a widespread sense of dread and uncertainty. In response, my advice is to acknowledge and forgive oneself for things that are beyond one’s control, such as natural economic cycles and political dynamics.

Fortunately, the majority of economists believe that the worst is over. They predict moderate growth in 2010 and the following years. That is what I believe. I also think that a return to the fundamentals will catapult us all back to prosperity. Allow the politicians to concentrate on the bigger problems while you focus on the one thing you really have control over…your own actions.

Aside from placing your company in a sound financial condition, here are some suggestions for getting your company back on track (and even further):-

First and foremost, there is action. I’ve observed a lot of companies that seem to be in hibernate mode. They’ve laid off employees, halted expenditures, and basically placed everything on hold until the economy “recovers.”

While it is important to assess and keep expenditures under control, taking a wait-and-see approach will not assist… Especially in light of all the changes that are occurring outside of normal economic circumstances. So waiting isn’t a viable option. Momentum, interest, and engagement are all created by taking action.

The good news is that, even if things have slowed down, new innovations in marketing, especially online techniques, persist. And there’s no shortage of ways to position oneself in this medium. It just takes a commitment to make it happen.

Start again with a plan– acting without a strategy is one of the most common errors companies make. Sure, I just told you to do something… However, you must have a strategy in place to guide that action. And instead of focusing on your personal requirements, build your strategy on the demands of your target market.

We continue to live in a world that is always evolving. This implies you’ll need a fresh strategy from time to time. When was the last time you revised your marketing or business plan?

You’ve heard it before: be flexible… because ‘change’ is the only thing that is ‘consistent’ nowadays. That is correct. However, I believe that much of this shift is having an impact on many of us. We’ve been bombarded with so much change (especially in technology) that we’ve developed a case of “future shock.”

I believe there is a clever method to adapt to change… It isn’t something that happens every day. The key is to stick to your strategy and make changes that will benefit it. I can promise you that things will change in the next year. What are your plans for retaliation?

Learn to embrace technology- I recently spoke to an engineering organization, and one of the audience members openly mocked the use of Google and LinkedIn…this from an engineer!!

Given the current state of the world, I don’t see any other option but to embrace (or at least tolerate) technology. If that’s too much for you, surround yourself with others who are aware of the situation.

Find a process/system that works– it’s a complicated world out there right now, made much more so by financial constraints. I suggest that you identify methods or procedures that you can follow to take you where you want the company to go in order to make it less complicated (more simple).

One of the main reasons I joined Duct Tape Marketing is because of this. They provide guidance and a step-by-step approach for getting your company to where you want it to go. I urge you to discover methods that work, whether you utilize my system or not. Finding individuals with similar interests (such as strategic partners) who can assist you on your path is a step further.

Taking these steps will get you where you want to go, regardless of what’s going on around you. Set yourself up for a successful year in 2010 and beyond!
