MYTOP is an acronym that I came up with to define a crucial business approach. In a minute, I’ll explain what it means and how it works. But first, let me explain why the MYTOP idea is so important for company success and long-term viability.
With unemployment rates reaching historic highs, an increasing number of Americans are discovering that the best way to find a new job is to create one for themselves. As a consequence, we’re witnessing a rise in the number of people who work for themselves. They are in business for themselves and by themselves, whether they are referred to as consultants, independent contractors, or freelancers.
“Have these individuals actually established a business?” I wonder. They have not, in my opinion. There is a distinction to be made between establishing a company and creating a career for oneself. When you establish a job for yourself, the business — or revenue — ends when you stop doing what you’re doing. When you start a business, on the other hand, the company becomes larger than you and can exist without your daily efforts.
Now, let’s talk about the MYTOP hypothesis. Multiply Yourself Through Other People (MYTOP) is a phrase that means “Multiply Yourself Through Other People.” Your service or product offering must be simple to teach and follow if you want to develop a long-term company. You’ll always be “the business” if you don’t.
Susan Solovic Media and ItsYourBiz.com are the two businesses I own and manage at this time in my life. It’s all about me at Susan Solovic Media. It’s a company I started since I have a few business ideas that are unique to me. Even if I have three part-time workers in the firm, it will never be a viable business model since there is no product without me.
ItsYourBiz.com, on the other hand, is a firm I helped establish that has the operational procedures in place to grow into a long-term business with a clear exit plan. My partners and I wanted to create something that would benefit more than just the three of us. So, without my day-to-day operational participation, ItsYourBiz.com is a solid company backed by a team of skilled people who know how to deliver a consistently high-quality product to our market.
What makes this difference so important? Because starting a company is difficult. It’s a significant investment of your time, money, and intellectual capital. If you are “the business,” your firm will have little or no value when you retire or sell it. There is no business without you.
A corporate entity that functions without you, on the other hand, has continuing worth. It’s possible that passing your business on to your heirs will be your departure plan. Many companies are still owned by second and third generations, according to my observations. Giving your workers the option to buy you out is another potential departure plan. Finally, you may always sell to a third-party or rival who is unconnected to your business.
In many business situations, there is no right or wrong response. Some individuals are content with a steady income and do not want to expand their company beyond that. However, early in your company’s growth, it’s critical to understand the limits of that choice. I’ve met a lot of unhappy company owners who couldn’t sell their companies or professions because they let themselves become the business.
